Modem Express

Modem Scripts

Modem express

General

Modem express is a utility, which can be used to configure the Mac modem script of a GSM phone. It can configure such parameters as speed, connecting network (ISDN or analog), transparent/non-transparent call parameters.

The utility can even enter the PIN code for you, if needed, and the connected device supports it.

The configuration is saved as a set (just like an internet configuration), which can then be easily activated later (also with AppleScript).

It supports Nokia 6210, 7110, 8XXX Series, 9110 Communicator, Nokia Card Phone 2.0 and Benefon Twin.

Modem express depends on standards and can be customized to identify the manufacturer and model of the connected device - very suitable for OEM purposes.

General information
These freeware modem scripts come without any kind of warranty. Please check also our upcoming GSM Modem Express software's features.

There are lots of differences in networks between countries, some supports the hispeed (14400) standard, some don't. Some networks have trouble supporting data. We have some information bits, which we are happy to share with you, but you may also want consult your operator for the best information in this matter.

Our testing sites are located in Finland, where GSM phones are a natural extension to the arm nowadays. Therefore these scripts have been tested only in GSM networks, using GSM devices, but there is no reason why they should not work in other networks which support cellular data. We welcome your experiences, where ever you exist; send us eMail: info(at)idexpress.fi feedback and suggestions - and eventually all of them will be compiled to a FAQ.

We will enhance and fix our scripts as needed. Also we will (and are happy to) write new scripts to new devices that we can get our hands on. So check for updates every now and then.

Installing
Expand the downloaded modem script archive, then drag and drop the script to your System Folder icon. Finder suggests you where they should go.

Alternatively you can simply copy the scripts to the Modem Scripts folder directly which is inside the Extensions folder (the names of the folder may be different depending on the MacOS language version).

General Release Notes
All of the released free scripts use V.34 (analog modem) connection at 9600 bps or 14400 bps.

Our soon to be released GSM Modem Express software can create scripts with all speeds from 9600 to 43200 (HSCSD) using ISDN (V.110 or V.120) or analog (V.34) connection - naturally depending on the device's capabilities.

Note:
We use Aladdin Systems Stuffit products to pack our Mac (.sit) and Windows (.zip) distributions. We recommend using the free Stuffit Expander to unpack them - usually it is already installed to your Mac upon MacOS installation.
If you are a Windows user, you can also use other software compatible with zip-format to expand archives.

Nokia 6210 Modem Scripts
Both cable and infrared connection is supported. This device is capable of HSCSD (multislot GSM data) speeds at best (up to 43 kbit/s or 56 kbit/s with ISDN V.120).

Nokia 7110 Modem Scripts
Both cable and infrared connection is supported.

Nokia 8XXX Series Modem Scripts
Nokia 8XXX Series includes models 8210, 8810, 8850 and 8890. Only infrared connection is supported. Even though the distribution includes modem script for 14400 bps speed, it is officially recommended to use only 9600 bps with 8XXX series phones. At 14400 bps the connection is not reliable with these devices.

Nokia 9110 Modem Scripts
Both cable and infrared connection is supported. We actually wrote the original N9110 Modem -script for Nokia Mobile Phones, to be included with the MacSuite for Nokia 9110 and 9110i Communicators distribution. Now we rewrote the script completely, it shows the speed correctly and connects with both speeds (9600 and 14400).

Nokia Card Phone 2.0
This is a PCMCIA card phone, with impressive data capabilities (even multislot HSCSD). We have also written a script for Nokia Mobile Phones, to be used with Nokia Card Phone 2.0 for Mac -software - if you are using it, you don't need this packet, rather use the Modem Options in the software. These distributed scripts support only 9600 and 14400 speeds.
Remember that you might need to enter the PIN code (and other security codes, if needed), before using the Nokia Card Phone 2.0. Again, with the software from Nokia you don't need to do this.

Benefon Twin (and Twin+)
This device does not have infrared port, only cable connection is possible. Supports both 9600 and 14400 speeds.
